LEARN MORE ABOUT
Legal Interruption of Pregnancy

At GINESER clinic we provide medical and social counseling services in matters of sexual and reproductive health care for all our patients.

The process to carry out any procedure at GINESER consists of patients signing an informed consent for the Legal Interruption of Pregnancy. This is a written consent of the pregnant woman, who requests or requires the Legal Interruption of Pregnancy (ILE) in Mexico City.

How do I confirm if I am pregnant?

The most reliable way is through a pregnancy test, there are mainly three types, which measure the levels of the hCG hormone (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) which is released when a fertilized egg adheres to the wall of the uterus, that is, when there is a pregnancy.

Urine pregnancy test: indicates the presence of hCG in the urine. It is an easily accessible test since it can be obtained in pharmacies. It consists of an absorbent strip inside a plastic cartridge, which reacts to the presence of the hormone in the urine.

It is very important to check the expiration date and do it properly for a more accurate result.

If you have any doubts about the result, it is important to see a doctor.

Qualitative blood pregnancy test: indicates the presence of HCG (Chorionic Gonadotropin Hormone) in the blood, gives a positive or negative result, does not indicate the approximate number of weeks of gestation. It is important that the interpretation of this test is carried out by a health professional.

Quantitative blood pregnancy test: indicates the level of hCG in the blood, which allows you to know the approximate number of weeks of gestation.

It is important that this test is interpreted by a health professional.

At GINESER the urine test is FREE during the consultation.

What should I do after I find out I'm pregnant and want to terminate?

If any of these tests are positive and you wish to terminate your pregnancy, it is important to go to an ILE clinic in CDMX, where the doctor will perform an ultrasound. This study will allow you to know with greater certainty the weeks of gestation and thus, according to the weeks, medical history and lifestyle, the most appropriate method for termination can be chosen.

At GINESER, ultrasound is included in the assessment consultation for any of the Legal Termination of Pregnancy procedures.

How can I legally terminate my pregnancy?

The use of medication and uterine aspiration (MVA) are the two methods recommended by the WHO to carry out a safe abortion. It is important that a doctor trained in ILE guides and indicates the route and dose of administration in the case of medication or performs the procedure by endouterine aspiration in the case of MVA.

Myths about Legal Interruption of Pregnancy (ILE)

Is an ILE dangerous?

FAKE

ILE is a safe medical procedure, especially when performed under hygienic conditions, within a legal framework, and by trained personnel. Like any medical procedure, it carries some risks, but these are small. There is much less risk associated with any of the methods of abortion recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) when used appropriately than with continuing the pregnancy and giving birth. Less than 1 in 100,000 women who have had an abortion die from this cause, while according to World Bank data, in Mexico alone in 2015, 38 women died during pregnancy and childbirth for every 100,000 live births.

Is an ILE painful?

FAKE

To mitigate the pain, local anesthetics are applied or even, if the patient so desires, sedation is provided by an anesthesiologist, thereby eliminating the pain.

Is an ILE traumatic?

FAKE

Terminating an unwanted pregnancy is an experience that women undertake according to their individual circumstances and the environment in which they live. Women terminate their pregnancies for very diverse reasons, and not all of them suffer emotional after-effects and feelings of guilt. Many women feel relieved and grateful when they receive comprehensive, safe and respectful care from health personnel. (IPAS. December 2002).

At GINESER we offer psychological consultation and counseling at no additional cost.

Will I go to jail if I terminate my pregnancy?

FAKE

Legal Termination of Pregnancy is a freely and voluntarily legal procedure in Mexico City, if performed within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

TYPES OF
LEGAL INTERRUPTION OF PREGNANCY (ILE)

Termination of Pregnancy with Medications

It is the method for the interruption of pregnancy through the use of pills. The patient goes to an assessment consultation, once her medical history is drawn up, her lifestyle is known and an ultrasound is performed to find out the exact weeks of pregnancy, it will be possible to know if the patient is a candidate for the treatment. If she is and if the patient wishes to terminate her pregnancy, she proceeds to sign an informed consent, a request for termination and is given the medication to begin the treatment.

The medication is taken at home, causing contractions and interruption in the form of bleeding, similar to menstruation.

During the following 15 days, bleeding and intermittent cramping will occur. After this time, it is very important to go to a follow-up appointment to confirm that the treatment has been successful.

Legal termination of pregnancy using medication is a safe and effective procedure, it is minimally invasive and does not require hospitalization.

Termination of Pregnancy with Manual Endouterine Aspiration

Also known as Manual Endouterine Aspiration (MVA), it is the procedure recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

It is a safe and effective technique. This procedure must be performed within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is 98% effective and significantly reduces the risk of complications such as blood loss and, unlike curettage, reduces pain.

A medical assessment is carried out, where a medical history is drawn up and the patient's lifestyle is known. An ultrasound determines the exact weeks of pregnancy. If the patient is a candidate for treatment and wishes to terminate her pregnancy, she signs an informed consent and the preparation process begins.

The patient is given a medication prescribed by the attending physician to prepare the cervix. It must be waited 1 to 2 hours for it to take effect. During this time, it is possible to present symptoms such as chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, colic-type pain and bleeding. Afterwards, the patient goes to the procedure room where she lies down and is given anesthesia (it can be local anesthesia applied by the attending physician or sedation applied by an anesthesiologist). The procedure lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes, from the moment she enters the procedure room until she leaves. At the end, she goes to the recovery room, where she will remain for approximately one hour for observation. She is given the necessary comforts for her improvement and later, if the physician deems it appropriate, she is discharged.

For this procedure, a total stay of approximately 4 hours is required at the clinic.

As it is an outpatient procedure that does not require hospitalization, the patient leaves the procedure walking and can return to their normal activities in a short time.

It is very important to attend a follow-up consultation after the procedure to assess the patient's health status.
